Every filmmaker alive today needs to watch this astonishing film (and all of their other films too)—such a great analysis, Gary. For me, the film also captures the poignancy of a changing world leaving many behind so well that it brings tears to my eyes every time. As Hesse ventured in "Steppenwolf", 'Human life becomes a real hell of suffering only when two ages... overlap.' And yet, Powell & Pressberger—as they do in most of their work—manage to create a story of hope, love and reconciliation out of the raw material of human suffering.
