To echo one of the refrains of British film critic Mark Kermode, Jaws is not about a shark.
He’s often taken a bit of flack for this because, obviously, there’s a great big bloody shark in it, and the film is named after that shark’s dominant feature. The movie is, to one extent, built on the foundations of one of the basic 7 plots: overcoming the monster (more on this is the coming weeks). That monster is, ostensibly, the shark.
So, yes, Jaws is about a shark.
