I was watching television the other night, and something occurred to me about the cycle of life. I don’t mean, in this instance, birth-life-death-resurrection-universal domination cycle of life, although it is worth noting that this life lesson that flipped its finger at me as I slowly sunk into the sofa (or couch - this is one of those odd occasions when the Americans have the right word for the effect - one is better off “sinking into the couch”, don’t you think?) does have resonance throughout other aspects of the living experience.

On this occasion, it became apparent to me that not only has something TV execs have been telling us for decades turns out to be untrue, but also that realising this bolsters an encroaching suspicion that has been doing its encroaching for so long now it might as well be regarded as fully-croached.

So, what are these two things I’m on about?
