The story goes something like this.
When my first novel came out in 2015 (For Those Who Come After, Parthian), it was the fruits of a process that had started eight years before. A short story about a successful business man dragooned into searching for the lost brother who had chosen penury and poetry over the family business, was developed into a 300 page “epic” that took in the Spanish Civil War, the Bloomsbury Group, South African diamond mines, and the international arms trade. Yes, it was ambitious, but if you can’t be ambitious with a first novel, when you know nothing of the publishing industry, when can you be?
